Our weekend was all up in the air. About nine hours from Vancouver to London, a seven hour layover at Heathrow, then eleven hours to O.R.Tambo in Johannesburg, in the province of Gauteng. Whew!

We spent our first full day adjusting our circadian rhythm to the nine hour time zone change. I continue to be sleepy at inconvenient times and wide awake at 2:30 AM.

Ian’s brother, Mike is our host. For now, wandering around his garden and having conversations over tea are just the right level of activity.

The photo above is the corrugated tin roof on Mike’s lapa, an outdoor shelter used for entertaining. Lapas more commonly have a thatched roof, but Mike’s lapa works perfectly well for a weekly braai, Afrikaans for barbeque.
